Branding Africa for Business
Africa as a continent has an image problem – ranging from poverty, disasters, conflicts, HIV/AIDS, to lack of democratic governance, corruption, etc. All these issues traditionally brand the image of Africa negatively and directly influence Africa as continent, and in different degrees influence ability of each individual Africa country to succeed in both international trade in Africa, and in Global trade and investment. This session is both interactive and informative, and will deal with the following issues;

  • How to brand Africa as continent for successful global trade and investment
  • How to brand individual countries, based on their strong business opportunities and incentives (with cases)
  • Major constraints – with respect to Africa as continent and with respect to individual countries, and how to overcome them

This session is recommended to Dutch businesses, African businesses from Africa, Design experts, African Diaspora enterprises, and Dutch public sector organisations dealing with African countries, NGOS, African professionals in the Netherlands

"Energy Development. And Access to Energy Services to the poor in Africa

  • The Role of Dutch and African Businesses
  • The Role of African National Energy Companies
  • The problems which Dutch and African businesses encounter – corruption, changing rules, no permits, no reliable partners, cultural issues
  • Best Practice experience of how ‘’solar projects’’ have been successful in Africa (e.g. NUON with Dutch government funding)
  • If you want to invest in energy projects in Africa, what guarantees can government offer you?

Energy is important for national economic growth and as the basis for enterprise development. Energy deeply influences poor people's lives. It is central to practically all aspects of human welfare, including access to water, agricultural productivity, health care, education, job creation and environmental sustainability. Yet, millions of households in developing countries still lack access to safe and reliable energy. To meet future energy demands, a new wave of investments in the energy sector in Africa is needed, both in energy utilities and in non-conventional energy supply chains. There is a great need for new projects and innovative business models that can be worked out in partnerships between African and Dutch businesses, and with the public sector that is very keen to support such developments. These issues will be discussed with Dutch and African entrepreneurs with large experience energy enterprise projects in African countries (Ghana, Tanzania, South Africa), China, Sri Lanka, (ii) senior energy expert with large experience as advisor in Dutch and multilateral donor and private sectors projects in Africa, Asia, South America, Europe

The Clean Development Carbon Mechanism (CDM) Opportunities for Africa; The Carbon market is a booming business. It has impact on almost all sectors of the economy. The Clean Development Mechanism is one of the market mechanisms of the Kyoto Protocol. It offers developers of sustainable and renewable energy projects in Africa the chance to obtain additional long-term incomes through sales of a new product, the so called greenhouse gas emission reduction certificates (CERs). Countries and companies with reduction obligations, such as the Netherlands and many Netherlands companies participating in the European Emission Trading can purchase the CERs to meet part of their obligations in a cost-effective way. Compared to Latin America and Asia, Africa has made the least use of the this mechanism until now.

Communication is the key to success for setting up businesses. Communication between people is considered the most important aspect because business is communication between people. In the developed countries people have access to information, data and video services to support them in business, whereas people in developing countries do not have access to these communication tools. This session will explain how satellite communication can be a solution to international communication needs in countries with poor or even missing infrastructure.
